I have noticed a wide array of English certificates: TEFL, TESL, CELTA, Trinity...quite a wide array of choices. I am a volunteer English teacher, here in Washington DC. One day a week, I have been teaching adult students. My hope is to move to and teach in Indonesia.
CELTA seems limiting, as its name suggests; the focus being on adults. TEFL and TESL seem to be simply a matter of emphasis, rather than substance. I've no idea what the focus of Trinity is. Does it make a BIG difference which of the certificates I get?

If you want just run of the mill positions then no. Doing a certificate in Linguistics is one other way to go. Doing a course through the British Concil is yet another good way. Indonesia isn't my pick of countries but some love it. I would recomend something a bit more tame to start out with.
