In response to another thread, what have you found?

Alas, the best I can offer is a private student who presents the NHK morning news.

However, a friend who used to live in my city had this private adult student whose job was something like 'physic acupuncturist'. According to her, he did acupuncture by manipulating the forces rather than using needles. He could see ghosts, apparently, but she said he wouldn't tell the patient because they wouldn't believe him. Instead, if he saw the 'ghost' (apparently like a colorful aura or something) causing the ache or pain in the patient, he would just remove it. Somehow. Apparently he was the only guy in the world who did it in this way.

She said he was so interesting she would have taught him for free. Unfortunately, when she left, she passed the class off to some half-assed guy who decided he didn't want to do privates after a week or so and dropped the student without looking for another teacher.

Even if he was a total loon, it sounded like a real fun hour in a coffee shop.

I've just finished a term teaching at a Biological Sciences Uni where a lot of my students were trainee vets. They used to show me photos of their dissections so I got to see the inner workings of chickens, dogs and cows. That was pretty interesting (in a gross kind of way.)

The most interesting student ever, for me, is actually a High-School aged Korean girl studying here in Japan

We have these occasional Japan-bashing sessions, which we both seem to find theurapeutic. Quite unsual that both the student and teacher are both "gaijin".

She makes me laugh though, with her "Korea is better" answers to any comparative questions.

Even Korean paper is better she told me today, sitting there clutching a transparent bag full of underwear.

Amusing lass.

I'm currently teaching a private student that does past life regression therapy and also claims to be able to talk with spirits. Fascinating classes. I'm on the fence as to whether or not I believe, but I always keep an open mind.

I had a couple of private students who were adult professionals, and near-fluent in English. They would come to my eikaiwa once per week to converse and increase their vocabulary and pronunciation skills. Both (one was a doctor, and the other a professor) were well travelled and informed, and we'd usually take turns reading newspaper articles and discussing them. I never felt like it was work, even though I did my best to make my students feel like they had gotten their yen's worth.

I had another class with whom I became good friends, and I still keep in touch with them. We spent a lot of Friday nights at izakiyas after class, and their class was always the high point of my work week.

Good thread idea!

A woman who climbed Everest but didn't summit. She talked about finding bodies on the upper trail and taking some hair (a ring/necklace also if I remember) from one woman and sending it to her Mother in Europe.

A Sony Engineer who wanted to commit suicide for screwing up the developmment schedule of some project at work. i guess the english teacher can sometimes inadvertently take on the role of counsellor for some Ss!

A Team Honda motorcycle Road Racing Manager, honda motorcylce engineer/test rider, and factory riders - i'm a racing fan, so i was pretty happy to work with them in the classsroom. they travel all over the world and meet a lot of different people.

as the years have passed, i might now be forgetting some of the great people I've met....not only interesting but kind of famous people like - singers, baseball players, actresses, CEOs, etc.

My student went to Belgium to meet the president of a bicycle company on behalf of his friend who hoped to become a distributor of the brand here. They had lunch and he had declined the offer of a free bicycle. His friend's plans never came to fruition, but he ended up importing a bike that is the only one of its kind in Japan. Nice bike, I saw it.
Also, he told me the other day that he is the manager of an elderly Japanese comedy duo. I asked him how that came to be. He explained he had been a film editor and had met them, they liked him. After he had left his job they offered him the position. He said many of his friends are comedians. He also said he is lucky. I told him he is interesting.
