For any of you people out there thinking about taking the plunge and moving to Taiwan, I've been living/teaching here for 9 months in Taipei and I love it. If you want to know more about Taiwan, as far as more than the salary is, I keep a blog about life here and places i go/things i do. you're welcome to visit it, and i encourage you to move here, its a great country, and more free than America and certainly the UK. http://web.mac.com/enoch83 |

Glad to hear you have had such a positive experience in Taiwan. I enjoyed looking through your blog. Keep up the good work! |

Uh, I haven't had time to look at your blog, but I really don't see any justification for your concluding remark. I spent three reasonably happy years at a vo-tech "university" on that enchanted isle, and found the expat venues there pretty lively, but I wouldn't really describe any oriental country as free. A foreigner can get decent treatment from an employer who needs him or her, and there are, as I noted, good expat bars and restaurants. On the other hand, there are the traffic, pollution, communication, bonehead students and other factors to consider. |

That's fair enough. Still it's nice to hear someone having such a positive experience. Too often on these message boards the only people who post are those who have something to gripe about. |

thanks for the response, but i dont need any justification for my remark, its my opinion. but just in case u still want justification, here is it... http://infowars.net/articles/july2008/080708Police.htm
if u think the UK is more free than taiwan after reading that, then well that's your opinion.
It is true that u say there are good expat bars and restaurants. but the traffic is really NOT that bad. i ride a motorcycle and i get around just fine. never stuck in a traffic jam. most expats use the MRT (subway) system so traffic is not a problem whatsoever. pollution is said to be bad here, but have u ever lived in beijing? i dont even notice the pollution (unless i'm riding behind a bus for a few unfortunate seconds). the pollution is certainly noticable in kaohsuing though. whats wrong with communication? u can't speak chinese/taiwanese?? thats your problem, go home. besides my chinese is very poor and i get around just fine, many people in the city speak english so someone can always help you. boneheaded students, well tell me a place where they dont exist and we'll all go teach there...but is good expat bars/restaurants, no traffic, everyone speaking english, no pollution, and perfect students all you care about? |

Life in Taiwan would be really great were it not for the crappy job market insofar as English teaching and the laws and rules for foreigners here for English teaching. |

I lived there for 2 years and you couldn't get me to go back. Too crowded, dirty and traffic conditions are horrible! |
