Been gone for a week (You all missed me, right?) Embarassed

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this. In Henan, I assume nation wide, no residence permits will be given until after the olympics and para-olympics. Had a canadian teacher at my new school, came a couple weeks on a z-visa he got in Toronto, we were both at the PSB, he couldn't get his residence permit, even though the z-visa was expiring in a week. He went back to Toronto.

ALso in Henan, because of the olympics (not sure which events are being held here in Zhengzhou) a The illegal street vendors in front of the school gate (the ones with the best food) were forced to leave, no vendors allowed on the side walk.

Is this nation wide?

I received a residence permit a three weeks ago in Henan, so it must be very recent.

Residence permits are regularly being issued against duly-authorized Z visas. There is still one province and one larger administrative district where business is still conducted as before -- "conversions" are made in situ and overseas trips are not necessary.

There must be something else with the American that had to go home -- did he pass the medical? Did something turn up that precluded him from being issued a residence permit? I knew firsthand of two similar incidents in a different province, strikingly similar to the one in this thread, but the "visa" issue was in fact a smokescreen for the STDs that turned up during the medical.

He was Canadian.

My RP was expiring July 31

Another school, a uni, told me maybe about July 25th that I must hurry, because the Henan waishiban told me that from Aug 1 to Aug 16 the Henan waishiban would not issue permits (In my mind I assumed they were talking about FEC, work permits). I took this with mostly a grain of salt, as I figured they were pushing me to sign quickly. Seems they meant the PSB

Signed with another school. The medical was an absolute must, even though I was staying in the province, and had not left the country. (Note, I AM NOT saying this will always be true. It could be simply because they were computerizing all of the medicals, we even got a Medical certificate (like the FEC, but yellow, mine said I had a fatty liver))
A day for the medical and a day for the FEC, then to the PSB. I and the Canadian went there with a Chinese teacher. I had my current residence permit, and the Canadian had his z-visa with two weeks left. The PSB girl at the desk told the CHinese teacher no. Also told the same to the three Filipinos who came in. My Chinese is not great, but enough to understand. The PSB did no kind of check, just said no RP's until after the Olympics. The chinese teacher tried, but the PSB girl wouldn't even look at the passorts for more then a glance. No checking the computer. The headmaster later confirmed this in English. I talked to the girl and thanx to previous threads on this board, asked if I could get a permit based on the fact that I had a Chinese wife with a Zhengzhou hukou. This they were willing to do. Only reason I am still in China.

So kudos to those who brought up the fact that you can stay here based on the wife's residence. Dave's is helpful, when used as intended

I was accused of starting a rumour by someone who PM'd me. I say to this, I have been posting here for seven years under the same name, unlike the guy who Pm'd me, who has posted under many different names. I very seldom lie on Dave's, so I tell him I resent that implication. This is a firsthand account, not , "I know someone who had a friend.."

Anyways, the date's mentioned were until Aug 14 or 16, after the para olympics
