I'm thinking of coming to Taiwan (Taipei) to teach but not sure I want to commit to a full-year up front. Is it possible to find a position for a shorter time period, say six months? And would I be able to find a place to live for that period of time? Obviously, if I like Taiwan, I'd be willing to stay longer.

Oh, I should also mention I'd be coming in mid-November. What's the job market like that time of year?

Thanks!

Short term jobs are about, but are much harder to find than the usual contract (12 months). People do though come and sign 12 month contracts without the intention of ever working for that long, but bear in mind this never helps those TEFLers left behind in Taiwan.

I'm glad Forest1979 mentioned that. If you do go to Taiwan to teach, or any country for that matter, please either make sure you complete your contract or agree up front with your school that you won't be able to. Of course there are some instances when a school won't live up to their end of the bargain and a teacher needs to find alternative employment. But anytime a teacher leaves without sufficient notice (it can take up to 4 months to find, hire and train a new teacher) it affects all of those who are left behind (and those yet to come). Remaining teachers have to pick up the slack, classes are canceled, management gets distrustful, and future teachers are looked upon with skepticism.

Yes, I'm well aware of the need to complete contracts. That's why I asked the question in the first place.

So any suggestions for finding a six month (or so) contract?

You might look on www.tealit.com. I believe I've seen some short-term contracts listed there. Really, though, twelve months is the standard length of time, and it's rare to find exceptions.

Thanks, I'll take a look at tealit.

A couple more questions then. I know in some countries, the worst companies are the ones that tend to post online. But I don't know about Taiwan. Can you find decent jobs online?

Also, is there anything in particular that I should look for in the online postings?
