Hello Dave's Members,

Greetings from Boston. In September 2008 I will begin teaching English at Koc University. Having never visited Istanbul or Koc University's campus, I'd like to learn more details about the commute between the campus in rumelifeneri and central Istanbul.

Specifically, if you were working at Koc University (rumelifeneri campus), where would you live in Istanbul? I'd like to find a central location that is also not more than one hour from campus.

I was thinking Besiktas, Sarriyer or Ortakoy? Are these interesting and lively places to live?

In short yes to all, Besiktas and Sarriyer are a bit plain.
Also on paper every where in the city is less than an hours drive away, but you have to factor in traffic, then the trip could run up to more than an hour and half to two hours.

So think hard before you make up your mind. Good luck.

A salutary reminder that back on Planet Earth people commute for an hour or more to work ! I will stay here in As-saudiya - 5 minute walk to work.

Sarıyer the town is awful .. but there are plenty of pleasant spots along the Bosphorous within easy reach of the Ko� campus (20 - 30 mins by Ko� sevice bus) ... the pick of the places being Yenik�y & Tarabya ...

Both will be within a 5-10 min taxi ride to the metro stations in Maslak and Daruşafaka when they open in Oct this year - from where you can get to Taksim in 20-25 mins ..
