Hi everyone,

I'm currently in the midst of the job application process, and have been reading through all your (very useful) advice on this board. Just one question though: I've read a lot about different institutions having different minimum requirements (eg. one institution wants Masters + 3 years exp. minimum, another is ok with Bachelor's + CELTA but the degree must be in English etc) but also have seen a number of references to 'Ministry' requirements.

Does this mean that the government has seperate minimum requirements to institutions? For example, say you are negotiating directly with a potential employer and they give you a provisional offer based on your experience and qualifications. Is it then possible (despite the institition having approved of you) to be rejected for a visa by the government because they're not satisfied with your qualifications/experience? Hope that makes sense. Would really appreciate it if anyone can clarify this for me - thanks.

Either everyone is traveling or none of us know the answer. None of the legitimate employers make offers to people without the right credentials. I have never heard of the Ministry negating a contract. I do know of people who failed the security check, but that wasn't concerning their degrees.

As to the recruiters, they seem to hire anyone... without any problems from the Ministry even when they probably should have.

Thank you VS. That's somewhat reassuring at least. The University of Nizwa have given me a provisional offer, so they are obviously satisfied with my experience, though (in terms of ESL classroom teaching) it is technically less than two years. Just wanted to know whether I should start packing my bags so to speak, or wait to make sure the Ministry gives me the ok too...

I think you are OK. I believe this is a private university, so the decision is probably theirs to make. But, for jobs in this part of the world, don't give up a current job or your apartment until you have the signed offer letter in hand. There can be hangups along the way that can delay you.
