Hello people:

After one visa run to HK and another upcoming visa run in the very near future, I'd want to go home to Canada to apply for the work visa. However, it seems that I live as geographically far from China as is possible. I live on the eastern seaboard of Canada, you see.

The last time I flew home from Asia (ROK) the ticket cost about three grand for a round-trip. However, the ticket was purchased during the 'high season', near the end of June. Has anyone from the most eastern Canadian provinces or northeastern US states been able to catch a deal?

In my region Air Canada (blech!) seems to have a monopoly going, and unfortunately, I can't seem to come close to matching the far better deals that American travellers can find to fly to and fro the same region. So, as an alternative, I have wondered if I could instead purchase a round-trip with an American airline this time and getting off at say, Maine, which is nearby my home. Would I be able to land in the US as a resident of Canada?

Dear SpedEd,

Look at this -- from www.elong.net right after the Olympics in September...

Shanghai - Hong Kong - New York - Hong Kong - Shanghai RETURN

Common 4640 Dragonair Hong Kong Hong Kong See details

September departures choice of returns -- that's only USD 700.00 return...and then you can hop a cheap'o flight from New York to the Maritimes or you can even take the train.

This is a FAR CRY from the USD 3000.00 that you were talking about...

Any questions or help, please don't hesitate to ask...it's actually cheaper, I think than a Hong Kong visa run these days with all of those onerous charges.

All the best,

NCL

Certainly, unless you're on some sort of watch list in which case you won't be allowed on the plane in the first place.
The real trick would be to find a train from New York to the Maritimes!

If the purpose of the trip is to get a Z visa, you might do better to go to Ottawa or Toronto, rather than your home down east, so you can go in person to the Chinese embassy (Ottawa) or consulate (Toronto). As far as I know, there is no Chinese consulate further east.

You can find cheap fairs on www.elong.net to JFK and back.

As a Canadian you are allowed to stop in the USA.

Here is the Amtrak schedule for New York to Montreal.

69 Adirondack New York, NY - Penn Station (NYP)
8:20 am
Montreal, QC (MTR) 7:10 pm

Via Rail maintains train service to Ottawa from Montreal (maybe 3-4 times a day) as well as service to Toronto.

Here are your only choices of Chinese Consulates in Eastern Canada:

Chinese Embassies in Canada

Embassy of China in Ottawa, Canada.
515 ST. Patrick Street
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Kin 5H3.
Tel: (613) 789-3434.
Fax: (613) 789-1911.

General Consulate of China in Toronto, Canada
240 ST. George Street
Toronto, Ontario, Canada. M5R 2P4
Tel: (416) 9647260.
Fax: (416) 3246468.

Here are the Greyhound Bus Schedules from New York to Ottawa which is probably the Consular Jurisdiction Area for you:
