Has anyone read Giles Milton's book on Izmir ? "Paradise Lost". All part of the revisionist tendency in historiography. "Ottomans - good. Kemalists - bad."

Perhaps I am being too hasty in my judgment. I have not READ the book yet !

I'm half way through it. It does seem somewhat biased and is irritating in a) not providing a complete bibliography and b) referring to places by their old names (eg Cordelio, Bournabat) without a glossary to connect them to the modern names. I know "Bournabat" = Bornova, "Paradise" = Sirinyer etc but some of them defeat me. Oh for a good map and glossary in the book!

I am halfway through it and irritated by his identification with the "Levantines" ie the Anglicised super-rich of that period. I would prefer to have what the Germans call the "Froschenperspektive" !

He seems to rely exclusively on sources in English. A readable book, and enough to make me re-examine my Kemalist position !

Kemalism!!
Well, Uncle Scotty, don't you know that Kemalism is dead in 2002, and if you stay as you are, then you are a big looser! Laughing
I thought you are an old socialist with a Scottish flavour! Laughing

007 I am shocked that you dare to criticise the founder of Modern Turkey !

Well better Mustafa Kemal than Enver Pasha ! Or would you be a supporter of Mehmet Vahdettin ?

I can rest now that I have unmasked our Naughty Numerical as an agent of Mehmet Vahdettin, working for the re-establishment of the Caliphate.

Mark Mazower's book "Salonica" is better written, original and more interesting.
