Hi folks,
I need some feedback, but I guess first you need some background. My husband received his CELTA certificate this summer and by next summer we hope to be in CUernavaca where he will be searching for a job, preferably at a university. We've each been teaching more than 20 years at community colleges in the US, holding masters' degrees plus hours above. We have a 13-year-old son who we hope to place in a private bilingual school. He has a reading disability, but seems to think Spanish is much more logical than English. We've seen an educational psychologist in Cuernavaca who has counseled us that Mexican educational systems, private and public, seem to expect boys to do poorly in school. She also said that private, after-school tutoring or "therapy" would be the way to address our son's educational needs.

While living in Cuernavaca, I expect to do some marketing for a Spanish language school. Since I know the US educational system, I can smooth the waters for the Spanish school as it attempts to broaden its markets.

So now you know the situation. What's my question? Does anyone have any caveats or advice to give us regarding job searches or culture shock or our son's education?

muchimas gracias por la ayuda,
s

It sounds like you already have the school picked out, which is good. My only concern about your plan is that Cuernavaca is known to have a glut of Spanish language schools with a wide variety of reputations.

If you are not already, I would plug into NAFSA and the SECUSSA-list serv as a good way to link up with Study Abroad professionals stateside (mostly) and know what issues are being brought up. This would include issues US colleges and universities have with regard to studying abroad at language schools.

Since I'm not sure if it relates to EFL, feel free to PM me if you are interested in more opinions and suggestions. I work in this field.
