I was told today that my classes have been cancelled until further notice due to an outbreak of foot and mouth disease. Don't know how long this will go on. Anyone heard any news about this? apparantely it just effects young kids. But this happened during summercamp as well, for a week or so. I wonder what steps they are taking to resolve this? I was told not to tell anyone about this, but i'm a little worried. |

I was told this today...
August in 2008 is destined to be special for all Chinese, not only the Olympic Games, but also the hand-foot-mouth disease. It is the most serious disease I've ever heard besides SARS.
Because classes in public schools hasn't been started, private schools like us can not resume our classes, according to the information from Education Bureau. So we are still waiting for the information, and we expect that the classes will be started at the end of this month, or maybe this weekend. If so, Ivy will call you.
Most of the Chinese teachers have less than 20 hours this month. I know that we should make sure that you have at least 60 hours' classes each month, but the disease is an accident beyond our control. Please forgive the school.
Thank you for your understanding.
Although my contract states I will be gauranteed 'pay' of 60 hours minimum pay per month?
I think I have reason to go to the foreign affairs bureau on this one.
Any thoughts? |

I'd want more information James, some proof that this condition actually exists. Otherwise I get the impression that your school is simply looking for an excuse to chump you out of some of your pay. Know what I mean? Maybe time to do some googlin!

Good advice. You could talk to FT's in other schools in your city. They're probably in the same situation as you, maybe they have more info. |

All of these are good points...but here we go..
This outbreak has been largely reported in the Western press, beginning with Hong Kong and then Australian newspapers on or about July 25, 2008 and continuing to this day. It has made some but not all of the major newspapers in the United States, including number of persons terminally afflicted, locations, etc., etc.
All of this being said, if you do a g**gle search from within the country, the references to all of these newspapers and dates and article main points will appear but unfortunately you may encounter some foreseen difficulties in accessing the actual articles themselves....
That is on the one hand..
On the other hand, the OP should read his contract carefully. I, for example, am paid for 18 hours per week, provided I am available..that is the language of the contract..
But more importantly, for those persons who were here during the S**S epid*m*c, and who are still members of this Board, it might be a good time to ask them if they were paid or not during this time. .. |

Thanks for the input guys.
I have heard of 'google' but difficult to find any reliable info here. ANyway they agreed to pay me in the end. If I didn't bring it up, they wouldn't I'm sure. I find their ways amusing sometimes.. I was told the message was an explanation, were as I found it to be an excuse.
Anyway the word on the street is classes will resume in september, when public schools go back - I work for a private one |

The national government also ordered kindergarten and primary schools to check kids twice daily for signs of the illness. In fact, health officials have ordered schools to close for two or three weeks if any child attending becomes severely sick or if more than two cases occur in one class.
Already, Mongolia has shut all kindergartens and primary schools as a result of the spreading outbreak.
Shanghai has had nearly 2,000 cases of the disease so far this year. |

wow thank's anda! you are quite the source of info round here.
This disease can affect adults, especially with low immunity. Others have suggested this is just an excuse for the olympic games?
How serious it really is remains to be seen. |
