Anyone know about these two cities near Nanjing? I may go work in one of them. |

Taizhou is OK.
Changzhou?? Do you like Pittsburgh, PA? Do you like Manchester, England? Do you like Detroit? etc., etc. Avoid it at all costs. And that's from someone who has been there (me). |

OK Thanks,
Hard to find specific info on internet about living in these cities. Will likely be in Taizhou soon though. |

Thank you once again dear Moon Over Parma for a very on-the-mark and astute post. I can second everything that he writes about the city.

The office/school in Nanjing (where I am now) that hired me wants me to go to Changzhou. I could persuade them to send me to Taizhou, or maybe Wuxi. The offer looks OK, just would like to know which city is best to live in. I want one with a nightlife and some western amenities, and some other friendly expats around. Nanjing seems OK on all these things, it's just that the deal I have been offered is not for Nanjing. I have a few days yet to figure things out. The job starts Sept. 1st, a high school position. I could take a trip or two and visit for a few hours. Not sure that'll help much. One thing though, if Changzhou or other sucks, at least Nanjing and Shanghai are not far.
By the way, only been in China for 3 weeks, haven't been out of Nanjing yet. |

Wow. A trio of cities I'd avoid!
If the pay is good, something to consider is where you will be living in those cities. If you are close to a decent supermarket, public transit, nightlife, etc. (usually meaning downtown) then pick your poison wisely. If the schools seem on the up-and-up and all pay the same, then the caveats of being able to get in and out via train, plane and bus are serious considerations. Maybe Changzhou out of the three. Wuxi has reoccurring issues with algae and water rationing because of it. Hopefully that's in check now.. There is at least a foreigner-friendly site that can tell you what's going on in town. Chanzhou has some sort of night life. It's just if you're stuck living far from it then it's a pain. That applies to Taizhou and Wuxi, too. So, good pay, decent school rep, ability to find tings to do, ability to get into and out of the city when you want to take a trip and where your accommodations are located should be factors in your final decision. If you want nightlife, then anything beyond 15 actual minutes from the urban center should be avoided. 15 actual minutes, not what some FAO claims as a, "fifteen minute bus ride." That usually means 45minutes to 1 hour's distance in reality. Good luck with your decision. |
