Howdy, I'm about to start work in Shanghai next month and I was wondering what the standard dress code might be for teachers? Does it just vary by school?

It varies. Neat jeans and a button up or polo shirt would be OK in most unis and middle schools. Language schools are selling a product, and the western teacher is the face of that product, so more formality is often needed.

Search function!

Long and short of it: dress casual but respectable the first week and observe what others are wearing. If you need to step it up a bit in the fancy department, or you can dress very casual you can adjust quickly.

For $6000RMB or less a month - how about a used potato sack with holes cut in it for your arms and head!
