Hello all,
I'm thinking of teaching in Turkey. I have some questions. I've taught E.S.L. in Taiwan and South Korea.
1. Especially to those that have taught in South Korea and Turkey: How do you like Turkey compared to South Korea? Pro's and con's?
2. Have any of you dealt with the recruiting organization RTF? If yes, what was your experience?
3. How is it teaching Turkish children? How are they?
4. Have any of you lived in Ankara,Kayseri,Bursa,Sakarya or Adana? If yes, what is your opinion? RTF mentioned to me that jobs are available in these cities. Pro's and con's? I don't want to live in a huge city like Istanbul. I'd rather live in a smaller city.
5. I was informed by RTF that I'll get a tourist visa when I arrive in Turkey, then get a residence visa and then a work permit. I've read that it takes three months to get a work permit. Is this true? If yes,why so long?
6. How are the Turkish people in general towards foreigner's? I was told that they're quite hospitable.
7. How is the cost of living in Turkey?
8. Have any of you traveled around Europe during your time in Turkey? If yes,how was it?
Thank you! |

Pay is close to half what you'd get in Istanbul if you went to those other cities. I've lived in Ankara and found it boring for a city of its size. I has something like 4 million people but it's a government town, so it's not a lot of fun. I earn 4,300 YTL a month at my school here in Istanbul. You'd be lucky to get 2,000 in Ankara or Adana. More likely 1,500 plus shared housing.
Yes, usually it takes 3 months to get your residence permit. I think part of that waiting time is due to the school waiting to see if you'll stick around. They have to pay out good money for a work and residence permit and they want to be sure you won't flee in the middle of the night just after getting it for you.
If you live in Adana or Bursa, It'll be a bit more difficult for you to run off to Europe for a few days. Also, with the lack of money you'll be making, you won't be able to afford to travel very much.
Hope that helps. Cheers! |
