Hola,
I was wondering what some of you teachers have done for banking. Do your landlords or whoever except American checks? It might be a little crazy only dealing in cash all the time. I know my debit card will work, but I was wondering what some of you do. Gracias.

Spain has a big cash culture and there's no real reason not to use the "bank-of-under-the-bed", especially as, quite frankly, teachers don't really earn that much to have any significant savings.
However if you do manage to save anything up, there are many banks who will happily open an account for you, especially those in the city centre near plaza de Sol.
As far as I know, it's not an offense to open a bank account when you're here "on a tourist visa", the only possible drawback being that you are basically providing concrete evidence that you are outstaying a visa. Then again, any mobile phone you have, even pre-paid will provide similar evidence.

I was surprised when living and teaching in Madrid last year how easy it was to open a bank account with only my tourist visa and US passport for identification. Whereas this year, living and working in Mexico, I've had to wait to get my residence/work visa before being allowed to open an account. |
