I've just read that Andy Murray (the British tennis sensation) has ''crashed out'' of the Olympic tennis tournament. Why is it that modern sportsmen/sportswomen are never ''eliminated'' or ''knocked out'' but ''crash out''? Even the BBC uses this idiotic expression. When I was Andrew's age ''crashing out'' meant going to sleep, usually after consuming copious amounts of beverage alcohol.

I guess it signals that the Beeb thinks he by now has the skills to beat better players and therefore shouldn't have lost in quite the fashion that he presumably did (I didn't see the match). Less loaded speech would simply say somebody beat him or he was beaten by somebody, fair and square.
