In 1962 I was bumming around Italy prior to my senior year in high school, hitchhiking with a tattered backpack, almost completely broke. Leaving Roma heading for Napoli I was given a ride by a well-dressed local who immediately hired me as an English teacher at his small language school in Sorrento! The very next morning I was teaching classes for @US$80.00 a month. I was given a storage closet as a place to crash and ate at a local bar his cousin owned. No visa, no diploma, no registration, no nothing. The most interesting group I taught were local tourist police! They all called me Professor. |

Things have changed significantly all around.
Did you want to make a point, or just share your memory? |

Well, now having an M.A. in Linguistics, I'd be hard-pressed to find a job there with my U.S passport. |
