I see a lot of people playing it Medan in cafes. Well, at least compared to what I wuld expect. (zero) Is it played throughout the archipeligo to any great extent? Has anyone given the locals a game and can comment on their ability? |

It's played alot in Jakarta, often with timers, taken pretty seriously and with numerous spectators.
My ability is cr*p, so they seem pretty brilliant to me! |

Chess is very popular everywhere I have been in Indonesia, especially around Jakarta. Very often you will see games at the ojek shelters or at warung. I've not had a game with anyone yet, I assume I will be easily beaten when I do as these guys play a lot. |

As stated they love to play it outside warungs or at ojek stands. However it never ceases to amaze how they can play in such bad light at about midnight or after!!
I have a mini games set in the class room, (5 or 6 different games) and the boys always go for the chess set straight away (they are about 7 or 8 years old) so they do get an early start. |
