How do you get rid of blatantly immoral teachers?
What right does a teacher who picks up prostitutes every weekend have to teach children and teenagers?
What right does a known drunk or drug addict have to teach children and teenagers?
Would you allow such people teaching in your schools in your home country?
I would think when teaching abroad, someone would keep themselves to a hire standard... |

Oh give it a rest!
If they don't take it into the classroom what can you say?
All professions all over the world have folks who use and abuse drugs and alcohol. It is not monopolised by the ESL teaching profession. Even Presidents and dignitaries have had their share of misdemeaners. |

Otherwise they wouldn't get hired...
Sorry, couldn't resist.
But seriously, while I do appreciate why the OP might be worked up about "low moral standards" in the Jakarta EFL scene, I have to concur with laughing magpie.
Such goings-on in my home country? Well, yes. Just thinking back to my secondary school, we had several alcoholic English teachers (natch) and a male Maths teacher who was picked up for curb-crawling. They stayed employed. The only guy I remember getting fired was our gay, paedophile pastor, Father Richard (so, inevitably, he was known as Pop D1ck), who used to come into the boys changing rooms with a bullwhip, lycra leggings and a hard-on.
Now that I would classify as blantantly immoral AND as being the school's business. |

I will only say that... its their business if they want to drink, do drugs etc outside of school. ( I dont drink, smoke or do drugs)
BUT WHAT ANNOYS ME IS...
When teachers ring up the school... or DONT EVEN BOTHER RINGING UP ..saying oh I cant come in to work today... because I had a big night out last night on the grog...!!!
thats the time when I think the DOS should FIRE THEM... especially when its fairly regular occurance... geez...I feel guilty for having a day off when I'm actually sick...but some people...dont give a STUFF !!! |

These questions of yours, I'm not sure what you mean. First you ask how to get rid of "blatantly immoral teachers" - does that question stand on it's own? I can't help inferring that the two follow-up questions suggest that teachers suffering drug and drink problems are "blatantly immoral teachers" and that men who sleep with prostitutes are unfit to teach teenagers.
Are these genuine questions? Are they just a vehicle for a rant?
To answer the first "question" - I have no idea how you could "get rid of blatantly immoral teachers" but are you not bothered about secretly immoral teachers? The ones who are honest about their immorality frighten you more than those who hide it? Oh and another thing -
Do those who only sleep with prostitutes occasionally present no problems?
What about guys (I assume you're talking about guys here, right?) who only take drugs and booze on a "binge" basis but have no addiction issues? Are they exempt?
Maybe you should include people who drive gas guzzling cars? Maybe those who voted for the political party you don't like?
It would be much more interesting for us here if you were to tell us what lies at the root of your uneasyness with those groups of people you mention ie. Horny men (who are attracted to adult women) and people with drug related health issues - people you would call "bltantly immoral". |

Q1. How do you get rid of them? Fire them, I guess. Same way you get rid of anyone else you don't like.
Q2. Banging hookers? As long as they don't do it at school, it shouldn't affect their work.
Q3. Drinking/drugs? As long as they're not inebriated or hungover at school, no problem. I had some great teachers who took drugs recreationally, and plenty who drank heavily.
Q4. Would we allow such people to work in schools in our own countries? What makes schools so special? Drinking and prostitution are both legal in Australia. Why should anyone get sacked for doing something legal? Drug addicts should never be sacked. If they're unemployed, then they have to rob people to get their drug money. Teachers shouldn't sell or advocate drugs to students, but if they take them in their own time and space without hurting anyone, then they should only have to answer to the law, not the morality police.
The last sentence contains so many grammatical errors (and a spelling mistake) it could only have been written by a drunk junkie who was getting blown by a ladyboy at the time of writing.
Having said that...
While all these flaws in morality don't necessarily make anyone less able to perform the duties they are rather badly paid to perform, in many cases they can make someone a pain in the butt to live with. Not necessarily because the person is doing any harm to anyone, but because the thousands of neighbourhood watchers are taking note and gossiping with endless repetition and exaggeration.
If one neighbour smells one waft of pot from one window in the house, two days later everyone in the neighbourhood believes that everyone in the house is a drug addict. If one guy takes home two different girls during the same month, everyone in the house is supposedly indulging in all-night orgies every night. And, of course, if one person in the house gets busted with a joint, everyone in the house will be going to court or shelling out big bucks to avoid doing so.
So it does become the school's problem if the teacher's actions affect their capabilities or the comfort/security of other teachers sharing the same provided accomodation. Otherwise, everyone should just mind their own business. |

I wish people would stop gossiping about what consenting adults do in private and instead save their energies for getting rid of real sickos that are a genuine danger to students. Usually the latter are able to operate undetected for ages because school management is too busy bitching on about alleged minor transgressions in teachers' private lives. |

When i was at high school it was regular thing for some of the teachers to go to the pub for friday lunch.
they would return quite pizzed. when we turned 17 we also frequented same pub on friday for lunch, which was also against school rules.
do these bule teachers drink during working hours as my ausie teachers in Brisbane did?
the teaching profession aint so holy.
and ESL teachers in Jakarta need to let off steam for christs sake. |

For some booze might actually make them a better teacher... more vocal and communicative anyway
I knew some drunks who used to have orange juice and mansion house vodka in between classes...
I think I know the teacher at ILP that you mean, Tanya... the one who routinely doesn't show up for classes and doesn't call in... I wonder if T is ever on this board... I suspect not. |

Lots of interesting points.
While I agree with the original poster that teachers should maintain some level of credibility and professionalism, that clearly does not extend to policing your staff's activities once they have clocked out.
There are many "functional" alcoholics and junkies in every profession, although I do think EFL (especially in Asia) attracts more thatn it's fair share.
My first DOS in Indo was a "dysfunctional" alcoholic, and an absolutle nightmare to deal with. But that probably wasn't due to her drinking, more the fact that she was hopelessly unstable and should never have been put in a position of authority to begin with.
My second DOS in Indo (who lasted a total of 6 days) was an enthusiastic user of prostitutes all week long, who unfortunately did consistently attempt to "come on" to female staff members and students.

FYI, gay padophile is an oxymoron. You cannot be both. Paedophiles are paedophiles (regardless of whether they prefer boys or girls) and gays are gays. Lumping them together only helps to promote homophobia. |

I've got a bigger problem with puritanical, self-righteous, judgmental dorks who don't understand the human condition and don't have a "higher" standard themselves, especially in spelling. I don't want people like that teaching my child. |

Is this a key for another thread? |

Joachim,
Really? I didn't know that. All I was trying to convey is that he had a thing for little boys but not little girls. |
