Ok....
I'm just about to finish my first year in Jakarta *ahem* nuff said....
Now I'm looking to travel for a couple of months before aiming for higher positions and a slightly better paycheck. Here in Jakarta it averages out at about $800/Month... which goes LONG way, but still limit's the amount of saving that can be done.
I've heard good things about Shenzhen, China. Now what I really want to know is are these whisperings based in reality or are they the nostalgic fantasies of someone who woke up and found themselves in Jakarta? Just wondering.
Here's something to the effect of what I heard:
Shenzhen is modern, clean and well structured. It's sprung up in the last twenty years and is pretty much a Westernized city.
The pay can range from $RMB 10,000 UP, leaving one with anything between $1500-2000 per month.
You don't need the Degree etc that the higher paying countries like Korea and Japan require.

My qualifications pretty much end with a Trinity Cert. TESOL and 1 years experience of teaching all levels. So..has anyone been to Shenzhen? Anyone taught there? Can anyone shed light on the situation? Thanks in advance for any replies. |

Dear Gav,
This question comes up very often on this Board in all shapes, forms and ways. I think that if you did a search just for the word "Shenzhen" you would enough to read for at least a week..ha ha ha ha..and you would be well informed.
All the best,

I believe your memory has zeroed in on the hype to the detriment of the many facts that might be more helpful to know...
Your dreamed-of income borders on the fantastic end of the scale; it is achievable - but you shouldn't bank on it. In the coming academic semester I reckon fewer vacancies need to be filled.
Shenzhen is a soulless city and expensive to boot. |

Most reputable schools in Shenzhen require a degree, although a few mills might take you without one. Backpackers are not particularly welcome anywhere in China these days. |
