Hi all,
I've been to Thailand before and I'm aware of current events regarding the pm and his protesters, but I'm wondering if there are any intrepid expats actually employed in the South right now. I'm interested in Songkhla and Hat Yai. Has anyone info about the current state of that 'insurgency' down there, and does it sometimes reach the cities I mentioned.
When I was in country about two years ago, not a day went by that I didn't read in the Post about a local murder or bombing. I'd be keen on hearing from anyone who is actually on the premises right now.
Thanx a lot! Rolling Eyes

You're in luck, I'm teaching in Hat Yai and have been living here for a few months. The insurgency in not concentrated in this (Songkla) province, but is primarily in the three neighboring provinces to the south east. Hat Yai and Songkla are pretty safe and laid-back, although it's true that there have been bombs here before as well. Since I've been here, I've just heard of one instance, when about 6 small bombs went off at different places around the province one evening. I don't know for sure, but I don't think anyone was hurt or killed; I think they were in more rural areas outside of town, although I heard one was in front of a hair salon. Overall, I feel pretty safe and almost never think about bombs, and there are quite a few other foreigners here as well (I try to meet as many as possible). Songkla also has lots of foreigners living there because of the jobs with the oil companies. Let me know if you have any other questions.
