The town is rather average, the river front a bit rundown, the surrounding country quite impressive (it's maybe worth renting a moto to check it out if you have a good map). It's a convenient point to get to Ko Phi Phi, of course. There is a huge school next to the small farang quarter. Another thing or two: I was there almost two years ago, and I remember the locals as being the friendliest Thais I've encountered anywhere. No kidding. Lastly, for some reason, they have the best Italian food there that I've ever tasted in Asia. Top notch on the pizzas.....go figure. Cool

Is a large place. Krabi town is far from the beaches. The "main" beach is Ao Lang, which has pizza places etc. It's about 20km from town. Not many people stay in krabi Town.

If you book into a beach hotel, they will pick you up at the small airport, but is will be 600b each. probably worth it!

The highlights are the speedboat trips to Phi Phi and the incredible place where THE BEACH was filmed. Most trips are about the same price 1500-2000b the whole day, and you go diving in several places. At this price, there will be others on the boat (maybe 15-20 of you) BUT you can hire private long-boats with engines if u r rich.

I didn't like Krabi town much. In general, all of Krabi is a tourist zone. You can find McDonalds and girly bars no prob. In its favour, it's not as ruined as Phuket or parts of Samui.

best to google the Krabi map. U can see how spread out it all is!

Yeah, I was in Ao Nang, and there are tons of Italian restaurants for some reason (don't see that many in other parts of Thailand). It's the tourist town near the beaches, whereas I think Krabi itself is inland and there's not a lot of tourist stuff there.

It's the funny thing about Thai cities; it's hard to explain, but the big ones don't seem to be significant in and of themselves. I took the train to Surat Thani, because I saw on the map that it's next to the ocean, and my guidebook said that boats leave from there to Ko Samui and Ko PhaNang. I thought it was going to be a busy port city, but it was just kind of urban sprawl, and not many docks or boats. Instead, I had to take a bus for an hour to a village called Don Sak, I believe, which was the actual disembarkation point for the island, even though very few people live there. Everything's just very spread out here. Cities like Krabi aren't really port cities like in the movies.
