Apart from the obvious, a job, hosting students is a great way to go.
You need a large house, a cooperative partner, no police record and a reasonable amount of energy.
We've taken in 3 high school girls, one each from Korea, China and Japan. As a result, there are no language cliques, and their English is soaring. So are food and utilities, but we're still $30,000 ahead a year.
Using your East Asian experience, it's easy to structure things [especially food] in an Oriental-friendly manner, whilst being pro-active on the English front. Our girls are the envy of their expat classmates.

I'd like to do that in the future. Sounds difficult but rewarding.

An aunt of mine has been hosting students from other countries (Ecuador, Mexico, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Japan) for about the last 8 years with great success. She's actually heading to Italy at the end of this month and will be staying with the family of one her host students.

My local State Education Dept [which I work in, BTW]. However, you can do it privately. Just advertise on your local university accommodation board.
The going rate for full board, 3 hots and a cot, is $200 a week for a student who has their own room.

Don't go near EF.......they don't pay anything, but what do you expect?
Our 3 girls are doing their full senior high school here, and then want to stay on for uni, so it might last several years.

There is a student organisation in my hometown that allows you to not only house students, but also to teach them within the home.

It isnt a year round program unfortunately, but it would be possible to take students for about 6-7 months of the year.

Its just under 50 for teaching a group of 5 from 9 - 12.30 per day, and about 12 per student per night (not a fortune).

I havent done the math, but its not far short of 100 a day, so getting on for 3000 a month during the season.
