So, I got paid this morning from HH but was told that it is 1,500 short because the place that processes it messed up. They told me they would pay me the difference next payday.
Is this common for language schools or am I getting screwed?

Language schools are notoriously sloppy about pay -- not all of them of course -- and for mysterious reasons, the "mistakes" they make are always in their favor.

I don't think you're getting screwed. But I think it would be fair and diplomatic to approach the school administration and say that because this is your first check, you need the money right away.

Yes, same thing happened to my wife at Interlingua. Just keep asking them until they give it to you - you may have to ask 30 times but if you don't say anything, they won't do anything.

They told me they would pay it in my next check. I hope so.I'll wait and see. They are very nice and helpful so hopefully they'll pay.

That's not good enough. You turned up for all your classes and therefore kept your part of the contract, what about them? It's not as if they are a little one-man business with no cashflow - they could pay you by cheque, cash, anything.

(Don't say anything, Guy!)

It confirms my reservations about working for the major players - especially as TLWH says Interlingua did the same.

I have to agree with you Phil_K. I'm going to go to another school part time and try to get privates on the side. Besides, they give no benefits to their teachers. Sad.

One of the most famous ways Mexicans don't pay on time is blaming it on the "Contador" (like some mystical, all-saying, all powerful god somewhere)

The contador says Wednesday.

The contador is sick today.

The contador is out of town.

The contador will be back at 8PM.

The contador doesn't have the cash right now or simply doesn't want to give it to you now Laughing

The contador says go **** yourself

If this is your first paycheck then I can understand a mistake. We'll all human...

But they should fix it ASAP. Not in another 15 days when you get paid again. Just because they are nice doesn't cut it. You said that you are working 50 hours a week without benefits. The least they can do is pay you on time and pay you the full amount.

I had something like this happen early this year. It was an honest mistake. I was already working part-time and I then took over some hours from another teacher and they cut the first check (for those hours only) in that teacher's name. Accounting hadn't heard about the change in personnel. I made a big fuss and got my money on Monday.

If they can't pay you in full next quincena it's time to start looking for a new job...
