This is my first post here but I've been looking around this forum and khmer440 for the past week or so. I'm an ESL newb with a degree in sociology, politics and classical civilisation. Currently doing a masters in Environmental Planning but my plan is to do a CELTA this summer and head to Asia in September.
My main question is are there decent teaching jobs for someone like me in Cambodia? Is it a good place to start off teaching?
I don't expect much but I'd like to be able to have a decent room with a kitchen and toilet/shower, party a bit at weekends and do some travelling around the country on school holidays.
What about buying a motorbike over there? What kind of price would I be looking at for bottom end but reliable-ish?
Should I look to PP or some other city? Sihaunookville (sp?) maybe?
Khmerit what say you? (Besides try it and see =) ) |

i dont know about current job sit but thre is an other thread here that says its gettting harder, due to teachers coming in from thailand etc---maybe but things are in flux right
who knows--you really have to o there to find out--its that kind of place..i think there will always be many jobs there--- if you are willing to start with 6 am shifts and nites etc
with an ma in environment you could get a job in the ngo world--do you know about the ngo world--pays rather better than esl
try the khmer440 website too but dont expect much help re teaching info
anyway just try it and see--yr job is the last thing to think about dude |

Thanks for the advice khmer and the tip on the NGO's I don't really know anything about them though I'll certainly look into it. Thing is while I will have the MsC when I go I won't have any working experience in the field...
Looked through khmer440 a bit, seems bit more like a closed community of guys who like to rip on newbs, some useful info though for sure.
Watched City of Ghosts last night (Is it still like that?) and Amit Gilboa is sending me a copy of his book, any other films or books relating to Cambo?
Not being able to get a job before going out there is the only thing really putting me off at the moment I think I might go to Korea for a year and then take a trip to Cambo during the hols and try scope out a job.
One last thing I'm wondering about is how is internet access in PP? Since teaching jobs may not pay the best out there I was thinking I could supplement my income with ebay or google adsense or something.
And really the final thing, Pradal Serey... do they take kindly to foreigners trying to learn it? I have some kickboxing and boxing experience but not all that much.
Even if it's not my first teaching destination I definitely intend to 'try it and see', you should work for Cambo tourist board khmerhit |
