Have taught in S. Korea and Thailand and am considering Taiwan.
Straight up and to the point. Which positions pay English teachers the best? Universities, public schools, businesses, private academies, other?
Thanks.

I believe unis pay the most, and have the shortest hours. You could probably make good money in a public school, but the work day would be much longer. If you have a teaching credential from the States, you qualify for the Taiwanese public school system. If you have a master's or doctorate, you might land a uni gig (I did). |

No question: businesses. NT$1500/hour and up, and I could get 10 or more billable hours a day. Of course, there's some taxi-time, but if you arrange your clients so they're all in the same general area each day, there's minimal loss from this. On the other hand, you have to go out there and earn each client. And you have to find a visa sponsor.
Good points about universities: easy, easy work, rock-steady hours, captive audience, all at one location. But the money does not begin to compare. |
