Hello

I have a CELTA, an English degree and 3 months experience teaching English in Honduras I really want to teach English in Vietnam this summer (from august onwards) but I only want to teach for 3 months max. I am still new to this and one of my family has ill health so I don't want to tie myself to a longer contract. Is this possible and if so what is the best way of going about getting a short term position? Cool

Hey mate,

The best answer is to just come to Vietnam and get on the back of a motorbike and drive around the city stopping every five minutes you see a language school. You will have a job before the days out. Most schools don't require you to sign a contract, just come along and I am sure you will find work. The street that I work on has about 6 or 7 language schools. Finding work is easy. Try this street Ba Thang Hai District 10. It really is that easy.

Really thats brilliant! Is it the same for the smaler towns as well, for example beach side places or is this just for Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi? Smile

Jobs beside the beach are harder to come by. I was just thinking Ho Chi Minh City. But hey, it's Vietnam it cant be that difficult to get a job.

Could you recommend a good (cheap) hotel/guesthouse in the above area where I can have as my base for my job hunt? Cheers! Laughing

Backpackers ARea- Bui Vien st., Pham Ngu Lao st., De Tham st.

There are a lot of cheap hotels and guest houses in that area starting from 8usd to 25usd.

Hello me agian and I am in HO CHi Minh. I love the crazyness of this city but I have to say I am not finding a job as easy as I thought it would be.
I tried the above road ( Ba thang hai)and receptionists just took my CV and I have not heard anything back.

Is there a particulary good area? I have the qualifications and some experience and am keen to get started but I haven't suceeded in gaining anything apart from melting and learning to cross the roads. Help!

Also is there a good place to advertise for private language lessons? Someone stood me up for one today, the swine.

Money is very quickly diminishing (I didn't have that much to begin with) so any help again is so much appreciated. i found the responses and this website so far very helpful so cheers!

Which schools did you try on Ba Thang Hai? Be careful what time of day you go as managers tend not to be there during the middle of the day.

Thanks. It seems may be I was paniking a bit too early. I have now secured 15 hours at one school and because of your website list sigfreid I have 4 interviews to attend.

I am using you guys a lot but seeing as how you are so helpful do recommend any websites where rooms are advertised? Cheeky aren't I? Otherwise I know a good way is word of mouth but Iam impatient and getting a tad lonely in a guesthouse , sob sob.

I know you're already here, but for the benefit of others...

3 months is actually OK, at some schools you start with a 3-month contract and then you switch to a 1-year contract if you like it. You don't have to get a work permit the first three months, so you should be able to find some work for that period.

Just go onto the websites of the big schools (ILA, VUS, Cleverlearn) and get the addresses of their head offices, and check out the addresses on some other schools on SaigonESL.com. Go and drop off resumes, if they don't call you back then call them. I submitted resumes to four schools and got three responses within 24 hours. I was working within a week. You shouldn't have a problem. HCMC is a dream when it comes to finding work (if you've got a degree and TEFL and any social skills whatsoever)!

Hi, I am looking at a 6 month stay in Vietnam to teach English. I have degree, TESOL cert and 7 years of TEFL work behind me. Will I be required to obtain a work visa, obtain police background checks from teh UK, register as a teacher with govt or do visa runs out of the country in order to undertake short term work, possibly 3-9 months max? AM curious as trying to work out how feasible it would eb to try vietnam.

I think it's also important to remember that if you work for a legitimate school (one that deducts PIT Personal Income Tax) then you need to be in the country for 183 days, otherwise you are taxed at 25%. This will not be refunded if you stay in Vietnam for less that 183 days.

No need to do visa runs. Just get a six months multiple entry business visa once you're here. Many teachers (a majority probably) are working that way.
