I am thinking of moving my family to Jia Xing and was wondering if anyone has any information about the place. I would like to know the standard things: cost of living, environment, schools to avoid. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Is it Jiaxing in Zhejiang Province? I know nearby Haining (20 mins from Jiaxing, Haining is famous for the leather city: a shopping mall dedicated to nothing but leather, and the river bore). Neither cities seem to have much to recommend them. A 1 day visit is probably enough. There are few sights and few amenities, especially if you're looking for western food etc. Haining is quiet (has the 3 wheel pushbike 'taxis' in the centre; more or less closed down by 10pm; foreigners rarely sighted and they are usually in the leather trade) but is expanding out. I visited Jiaxing once many years ago but can't remember anything, though on the train through it you pass a pretty lake.

Both cities are rich, I guess, in Chinese terms, and Shanghai is very near (less than one hour by fast train). Also Jiaxing has good access to Hangzhou. It is not likely to be a very cheap place to live. Nor exciting!
