Hi Guys,
I've recently started working at an organisation in GDL and I'm absolutely loving being here and soaking up the city.
I've read a few posts about our rights as teachers here but they seem to be a little contradicting and confusing.
Can anyone tell me what my rights are in terms of IMMS, Medical insurance, Christmas bonuses etc?
I just want to make sure that I'm getting what I should be.
Thanks so much! |

Rights?
I think that all depends. Are you teaching completely legally on a FM-3? Do you have your CURP and RFC if you are? You would know if you have IMSS as you have to go to their office and get a hoja rosa and give that to your employer. Then you have to back to IMSS and get your actual IMSS ID card/book. If you have a FM-3 then you should receive the same bennie's as any Mexican.
IMSS (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social)- Mexico's national health care service.
Aguinaldo- Christmas bonus equal to 15 days pay.
Infonovit- I am not sure but I believe it's tied to your taxes paid to IMSS and they are housing credits.
Fondo de Ahorro-Yearly savings plan. Not everyone has one of these. You usually contribute a percentage of your pay and your employer matches that amount. You can receive all of it at the end of the year (the school year for teachers in a colegio or uni) or take out some of it during the year at several fixed dates.
AFORE-This is a private pension plan. If you plan on living in Mexico forever, then it's nice to have one of these.
Paid Holidays-All Mexican Federal holidays should be paid days off.
Paid Vacation- At least 6 days after your first full calender year of employment.
As you can see, with the exception of the holiday bonus and holidays, most of those bennie's are geared towards long-term stays. The IMSS is nice to have if you plan on being here long-term, but for short term stays paying out of pocket for routine medical care is the easiest and fastest way to go. Medical care is very affordable here.
If you receive the benefits prescribed by law then you will be paying something like 20-25% of your salary in taxes. Some schools will pay you by recibos honorarios (hope I got that right) and then they are paying you by the hour and they aren't giving you bennie's.
Sometimes it's better to be paid in cash or by honorarios, then you aren't having 20% of your pay taken out and given to Hacienda (SAT), the Mexican IRS. |

AFOREs are mandatory for those affiliated to IMSS. They're optional for all other employees. |

If you issue recibos de honorarios you will have to declare your income and pay taxes every three months and yearly. Unless your earning are really meager, you'd better get an accountant to sort it out for you. Make sure the person you worked for issues an hoja de retencin every time you issue a recibo de honorarios (these must include: amount, plus 15% IVA (VAT), minus 10% ISR withheld, minus 10% IVA withheld). |

INFOVAVIT - is payable to all workers, and is payed by your employer to... INFONAVIT.
You build up a fund, and after a certain qualifying period, and a certain period in the SAME job, your have 3 options.
1) Do nothing and continue saving. I believe (but not sure) that if you never use it, you can retire the funds upon your own retirement.
2) Take out and INFONAVIT credit - the amount of which is related to your fund, salary etc. This allows you to buy a property at favorable rates.
3) Take out a normal mortgage using AHORRO INFONAVIT, but using the usual source, i.e. bank or SOFOL, but your repayments will be lower than normal.
It is suppose that the credits should only be used for a place that you are going to live in, not for investment property, although some people ( ) abuse this priviledge. |

Quite right here...Infonavit only pays out to less than 600k, which is not enough to buy in DF, except in Chalco or some other district way outside the city. Infonavit rules are that you can't have more than one loan at a time, making it very hard to have more than one investment property going. |

Didn't I see more than once the word "specialty" when I was in good old Ottawa. Lacking an "I" methinks.
I think "payed" would have been acceptable around the tyme of Chaucer.
BTW (changing the subject) Love those bring-your-own-bottle restaurants in Montreal. La Mansion is DF is doing that now - at least the one in Bosques de las Lomas is. Great idea! |

Apartments in parts of Portales, Doctores, Tacubaya, Obrera etc are around this price. Actually the person I know who has an investment courtesy of INFONAVIT has in in Col. Guerrero, and it cost around $400K. |

Yes, you can find "condos" being built and sold within the INFONOVIT price range max. There are also thousands of houses under construction being sold in areas of Mexico State, Hildalgo, and Morelos within (2 hours or more each way) of DF. |
