So I'm on the verge of getting my TEFL certificate (very exciting) and the school has a job placement service (no extra charge) but they seem very doubtful about being able to find me jobs on the coast. They said there might be something in guaymas, maybe poza rica. So my questions are multi-fold.
1. Does anyone know anything about guaymas purely in terms of how it is as a place to live- friendly people, good bars, food, live music, etc...
2. As far as just showing up in a place and finding a job (private school/language institute) are there any coastal cities that jump out at you. I'm really not trying to go to acapulco or pv, but maybe somewhere like huatulco or campeche. Is there enough of a "scholastic" demand for english (that is, cold hard employment) in cities like that- I should add that there are two of us as well.
3. and finally, does anyone know of places with similar possibilities maybe only an hour from the coast. We're not that concerned about income- only that it match the cost of living...
thanks very much. |

I'm not sure about jobs on the coast, I'll just warn you to stay away from Poza Rica. I stayed there for a night while doing a road trip through Veracruz, and I didn't see anything redeeming or intriguing about the place. It's a big oil town, so there's lots of businessmen coming through, which also means many things are priced for those charging to expense accounts. My boyfriend and I still make jokes about taking another vacation there, a year after the fact.
Good luck with the rest of your question, I just didn't want you guys to take a job in Poza Rica, sight unseen. |

Don't let them send you to the private English schools in Tuxtla with the exception of Cosmul Lingua |

I think you'll have the best luck if you just go to your target city/area and go around from school to school. I know it's also the most expensive and time consuming way. It does seem to produce the best results, at least here in Mexico. This isn't a very plan in advance culture. Jobs come open out of the blue and often the first person through the door gets the job. Schools for the most part don't sit around and wait for the best candidate. They take the first they can get and that's one reason why the turnover is so high.
