Yes, we all know there is a shortage of FTs at the moment in China (well, in my city anyway) due to the visa clamp down etc...
We have an irresponsible FT at our school that continues to let his students, CTs and school management down by just not showing up. No phone call, nothing. He teaches full time on the weekends and my school has no notice to find a substitute teacher, he leaves his mobile phone off and just DOESN'T SHOW UP TO WORK!? He brags to other FTs that the school won't FIRE HIM cause we are already short of FTs and the school is having a hard time finding new qualified FTs.

Other schools in the area are also finding if tough. Our school management is very good to us FTs and they don't deserve this kind of treatment. This FT's behaviour makes all of us responsible foreigners look bad. I wish the school would have the guts to FIRE THE IDIOT.

Find a replacement and go to the management as a group and tell them that you have a replacement. That should get a result.

we are trying to find a replacement...no one seems to be avail and no/few new ones coming into to the country (until further notice)...I suppose the salaries will start going up.
Anyone finding the same problem with poor quality FTs due to the shortage?

The shortage is not the cause.

We have had that type of backpacker, permanent vacationer, slimeball since EFL began in 1879.

Last year more than 5,000 EFL jobs went unfilled.

That type is what has caused such disrespect for FTs within the Chinese community.

Well, "that type" is part of the reason perhaps...

And, no rules, or perhaps no enforcement of rules, to force institutions to hire qualified, responsible FTs.

And, 'pay peanuts, get monkeys' consequently comes into it as well...

Also, some underlying racism in not a few cases...

Pay peanuts - get elephants
pay bananas - get monkeys
pay real money - get real teachers

Yeah, good advice. If some guy is acting like an insufferable slob, have his legs snapped in half by thugs. And then the slob can pay the same people twice as much to have the whiner stuffed into a hole somewhere.

What, per province? I thought they were way shorter than 5,000, regardless of visa problems.

Or why play judge, jury and posse at all? Perhaps, as Voltaire wrote, just tend to your own garden.

If every incompetent, drunken, druggie, abusive FT in China were fired, it would result in a serious shortage...if I get your meaning, correctly.

I would say that if this FTs behavior does not affect YOU directly then simply mind your own business.

This Ft might have his own issues and problems and maybe doesn't care about his self or job - but, in my opinion, it's just not your business.

And as another poster pointed out, you get what you pay for and China isn't paying well so...

My last job at Funing Teachers College which is a government college they tried to do me twice on my airfares and travel allowance despite being happy with me. So send the useless backpacker there as that is what that management deserve. I got the exam results up by 20% and missed three days from work in two years and was popular with my students.

There is a reason for experienced teachers staying away from China. Backpackers can be just as good at teaching as university graduates as many are totally useless away from their mothers. At least backpackers are used to mixing with locals in foreign countries. What I got taught when I got my English teaching certificate was useless.

In South Korea when I started there, most lasted four months and some only a day before running home. The government schools are much more honest there than here also.

Then don't go to China to work, if you engage in a contract then it is assumed you are old enough and mature enough to enter in a legally binding contract. If you accept the pay grade and decide to go to China, then you must follow your side of the contract. Its discusting the number of foreign teacher prima-donnas that want their cake and eat it too.. Gold help a school if they are in non-compliance of a contract!!! But if a foreign teacher fails to hold their mustard, "Aaah.. Mind your own business! Aaah.. Its Chinas fault for not paying!"

Logic like this Fing peesses me off, and there is no place for individuals like this in China or any other place in the world for that matter..

loboman is right. Even the chinese teachers aren't noted for their "quality" teaching, showing up is enough. when i worked at hunan women's college, one of the chinese teachers often just played pop music and sat with her feet up drinking tea, she was also well liked by her students. and staff, good enough.

What the !?!?! Yes. It would be the school's "fault for not paying"!

I think bad schools and FAOs are in little need of help from any deity in worming their way out of contractual obligations without any fault on the part of foreign teachers.

Regarding lobomans' comments. Personally, I think responsible teachers have a responsibility to report inappropriate behaviour and actions by colleagues. But, it is a matter of degree, particularly in China where unfair and arbitrary penalties may be applied (if there is any action at all...).

However, just because there is no rule of law in China shouldn't exempt teachers here from similar responsibilities/obligations as exist in our home countries. In both maintaining a high standard in our own behaviour, and in responsibly reporting inadmissible behaviour by other teachers (FT and Chinese) and management.
