|
|
I am an educated and experienced American instructor who is teaching English in Tepotzotlan-a small town in central Mexico. I have an opportunity to give private lessons to a couple of children-a brother and sister who are at about the same level. Teaching them would not involve any travel or much preparation on my part. The two would study together with me. I know their parents and am on friendly terms with them. What is the current range of charges for private lessons? |

I wouldn't charge anything less than 100 pesos per hour. I would charge 200 or 250 myself, if I had to travel and if I weren't friends with the parents. |

No less than $100 an hour EACH, there are 2 kids. Sending 2 kids to the local second rate language school where they'll be rammed into a class with 15 others will cost a LOT more. This is the relative charging system! Don't give in to guilt, you're providing a service. |

What kind of visa do you need to teach private students and how do you get it? I currently have an FM3 because I'm teaching at a university. I'd like to work as an independent teacher with private students when my contract ends.
Any information on teaching private students in Oaxaca City? Is that a viable goal or am I being unrealistic? |

These are some of the recent threads discussing getting authorization for independent work:

What you do is to get the work authorization in your FM3 changed from "working for X university" to "working independently".
The process and documents required are similar to what you would have to go through if you were changing employer, except that where in that case you would present a letter from the new employer, here you present a letter you have written yourself describing the independent work you propose to do. You will probably also have to present some supporting documents (like degrees or other qualifications) to show that you are qualified to do same.
See http://www.inami.gob.mx/leyes/manual%20de%20tramites%20migratorios.pdf and search for "independiente"; and particularly note pp. 4445. |

I discovered to day that the family is indeed well off-if that matters. From reading the replies I gather that 100 is the minimum 200 the maximum. I'll have to pinpoint a figure -probably between the two. Although I have years of experience teaching, I have very little when it comes to doing privates. Thanks for the information. |
