				Im looking into teaching in Oman in the new year, but because of other commitments its impossible for me to stay there beyond 6/7 months.

I know that 6 month contract isnt easy to get pretty much anywhere these days, and i really dont want to accept a one year contract with the intention of breaking it.

So here are my questions;

Has anyone one heard of anyone having a 6 month contract in Oman, and if so where?

Do you think there is any possibility of negotiating with an employer during the selection/interviewing process, to reduce the contract to 6 months? I dont have a masters, but i have a degree, tesol, and 8 years experience behind me.

If i went to Oman without getting a job first, would it be easier to get that 6 month contract, face to face? (A friend of mine will be out there, and i will stay with her, while job hunting)

If needs be, and i have to break a contract, how badly is that seen? |

				Yes, it is possible. I was hired on a short contract. If there are any teachers who break their contracts and leave mid-year, the colleges will need immediate replacements. That's how I got my job in Nizwa--I started in December, and my contract ran through August (including the standard summer vacation, though).

				If you have a place to live, you might go and try to find something at one of the language schools. I doubt that it would be full time... or pay very well, but six month contracts are rare enough, that Denise's is the only one that I have heard of. But I expect that the recruiters at the colleges do whatever they can to put in a body to collect their fees.

Taking a full contract with the intention of breaking it in 6 months is considered as unethical and unprofessional as it would be anywhere in the world.

				| 6 month contracts are not that rare at all. I know of quite a few over the last year where schools offered between 3 and 6 months because they were in dire need of teachers. I suggest that you could contact schools direct. Of the cases I know, the teachers were hired the day of enquiry! |

Agreed. I recently completed a six month contract in Oman. Some posters on this board persist in responding to every thread, offering hopelessly outdated 'information'. |

				Thanks for the positive responses. I thought I was at a dead loss looking for a 6 months contract there.

So how did you get your 6 month contract? Did you find it before going out there? Or did you go there on a tourist visa first?

Also, do you know where I can find a list of Language schools in Oman? |

I will quote myself for the benefit of those with minimal reading skills.

And for the benefit of those with minimal current knowledge of the countries on which they post, 'the colleges' are not the only places in Oman to offer short-term contracts. |

				A sad reflection of the level to which Omani education has fallen. Short term contracts for those with minimal credentials... fly-by-night teachers.

Pity the poor Omani students caught in this spiral.
