** Having attended the MEXTESOL conference, I have returned back to Guadalajara and am very keen to see the resurection, or refoundation of the Jaliisco Chapter.
I think MEXTESOLs heart is definately in theright place and I am keen to help Englisah teachers, both native speakers and non native speakers meet and develop professionally.

Please PM me if you are interested in receiving TESOL journals, participtingin academic saturdays and workshops, all designed with your development in miond!

Iam really excited about this opportunity to do something and hope that others are interested too!

FINALLY- lets hope that MEXTESOL will bring their conference to Guadalajara in 2011. 1890 English teachers attended this year- itd be great to have this forum in GDL!!!!

Greg

I'm out of the country this year, but I've been many times over the past 10 years. Enjoy.

Oh and money? first try to get your books from the pubs FREE. If they don't give in then hit the distributors with your money.

This is GREAT!

I am surprised that MEXTESOL doesn't receive much coverage here in Daves- after all it is dedicated tot he pofessional development of ESL teachers.

What is your presentation at 8am? I'll definately drop by to say hello!

And for new readers- MEXTESOL is for all TEFL teachers- membership is reasonable, and this conference has a whole host of really interesting presentations, workshops and meetings aimed at helping teachers in the classroom!

I am very excited at this opportunity for professional development!

Greg

Mine is the one on Wikipedia... This years convention has a lot of CALL-related sessions... a big change from 2 years ago when there were none and I was told then that Mexico was too poor for something like that. The first plenary speaker, a founding member of MexTESOL spent about 3/4 of his presentation on technology, mentioning my pet project, self-access centers several times. Didnt agree with everything he said but I was impressed that it is coming front and center. Almost every time slot has at least one presentation related to technology and language teaching.

A friend of mine who teaches at UA Estado to Mexico went to a week-long conferenct in Puerto Vallarta decided purely to college instructors in languages. She came back and told me it was a bunch of teachers pretending they were linguists, with only access to materials and ideas 20 years or more old. Almost none of the presenters were foreigners. This convention has mostly foreigners, esp the highlighted speakers who have traveled here for this conference.

Wow, when I went to that conference two years ago in Acapulco, almost all the speakers were from outside of Mexico--many from the US who get money to present at a conference from their universitiies and jumped at the chance to do so in Acapulco rather than someplace like Minneapolis! Granted many were new to the conference presenting game, but it felt cutting edge to me because many were new profs presenting their doctoral research project. Maybe the conference didn't get the same play on the international mailing lists this year--or maybe the international economy had something to do with it.

I'm MELEE and I approve this message.

Well, Im back from the conference now, and I am REALLY impressed with what I saw. I went to the general assembly and found out that 1890 people attended the conference- plus speakers, organizers etc.

I think that MEXTESOL should be really really proud that they are helping develop teachers. It was so interesting to listen to the presentations and to meet people from all over the country.

From what I saw, I felt that 80 -85% of the participants were Mexican English speakers, but, all credit to them, they all spoke excellent English. Surprisingly, there were a fair few British English speakers.

There are MEXTESOL chapters throughout the country, however, if you are from GUADALAJARA please PM me, because I would really like to restart the failed Jalisco chapter. If this can get going, for just 200 pesos a year we can orgainse speakers and workshops throughout the year to continue the good work.

I enjoyed the conference as well. But I will make one serious criticism of the organization. At the national level it functions well... at the regional levels, its pretty dysfunctional. The national conference was supposed to be in Morelia, but that chapter fell apart and at the last minute they changed to Leon. Regional conferences arent anywhere near of the quality of the national, even in Mexico City... its pretty messed up.

More work needs to be done at the regional levels.

Are you an English teacher in Jalisco?

I am still very interested in setting up a MEXTESOL chapter here in Guadalajara.

The idea is that we can organise meetings and presentations to help our professional development as well as presenting members with an opportunity to network among like minded people.

MEXTESOL give members 3 journals a year, access to their webpage and their resources and discounts on things such as their annual conferences.

All this for 200 pesos a year.

If you are interested, and are in Jalisco, please let me know. I am really excited to meet with other people with the objective of opening a new Jalisco chapter.
