we have a 2 day break in QIngdao at the weekend and would appreciate if anyone can give us a heads up on the best 1 shop stop for western grocery items i.e. trying to avoid spending hours running around food hunting. we live in a small city where butter/cream/cheese/vanilla/cinnamon etc are not available and we'd like to load up also ground coffee and indian (black) tea, thanks in advance for any help. cheers rob

Try Metro .... It's probably your best bet and as your residing in Qingdao,you can take advantage of the fresh meat offered. I've tried Carrefour and Wal-Mart but not much luck.

In 2004 I registered at Metro (free) in Changsha and received their membership photo shopping card ... you can't purchase unless you are a member ... don't worry it's free,instant and available when you walk in the door.

My membership is still valid even with a shopping gap of many years and I have used that same card in Qingdao and Beijing in 2010 ... couldn't believe it!

The best I've found in China for Western food items is Jenny Lou's in Beijing..... the store in Chao Yang near the embassies is the best,in my opinion. Another good outlet is City Super in Kowloon.

Remember,membership at Metro is free and you cannot purchase without it.

I go into Metro and open my wallet pretending to get my card (which I do not have). Then I pretend I cannot speak any Chinese and say "Oh My Laga Gaga!" and they give me a paper with a temporary number.

I use that number to make my purchases.

thanks guys. I won't need to pretend to not speak chinese. will give metro a go.any tips on the best beach, for walking/flying a kite with my four year old?
