Wow..... Shocked I have to say, the following is Kafkaesque, by anyone's standards..... Poor poor man.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/west_midlands/7265789.stm

Customs found....a grain of ganja, the size of a grain of sugar! Shouldn't the imprisoned man be eligible for some kind of compensation?

How did customs actually find that grain, and then, in a fair minded country such as UAE why did they actually bang the obviously innocent man up? After all, UAE It isn't a dictatorship, or an autocracy like Saudi or what the Taliban has set up, so one would expect at least a degree of fair play -- how could they possibly prove it was his ganja ( all one single grain of it that is! ) , and how could anyone think he deserved his original sentence of .......four years!

Staggering.... I have no wish to defend those who DO play around with illegal substances or flaunt their "western cultural habits" in UAE ( such as "British beach games" etc ) but this guy was so very obviously innocent. He deserves compensation -- months in a foreign jail for nothing...It's Stalinesque.

My guess is the UAE Govt HAVE to have draconian standards as a powerful warning -- after all, UAE has now established its position in the business markets as being competitive and very open for business to all comers on the world stage, and as a tourist destination for its beaches/nightlife etc -- but at the same time, they have to get the message out that they are still a conservative Islamic country.

Nothing wrong with that per se -- but I do feel very sorry for the fall guys caught up in these showcase trials to prove the UAE govt's point. It's a deeply cynical process.
