Has anyone had any experience of teaching at Shanghai American School?
http://www.saschina.org/
I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone who teaches or who has taught IBD there, especially ToK.
Many thanks!
P.S. How do people living and working as English teachers in China and who have kids afford to have them educated? Do you receive an educational allowance or a free place at an international school? I've seen jobs for as low as 10,000 rmb a month in China but the cheapest international school place I can find is also about 10,000 rmb a month, and most are anywhere between 13,000 and 18,000 rmb a month. SAS above charge $22,000 US a year for years 9-12, so that's about 150,000 rmb a year so around 15,000 rmb a month (not counting the holidays of course). So how do people with kids but who don't work at an international school cope? |

Why do you go on here about SAS? There is no reason for a form teacher to hang-out at an ESL-forum. Besides, American schools aren't known to rip people off and treat staff like shit.
Everything at SAS is done the american way, so why not go to an American teacher forum somewhere?
15 000 RMB is a sufficient salary to have kids on. I know a guy with less than that and he does fine. |

The 15,000RMB he mentions is not the salary but the monthly cost of educating kids at SAS.
If you have to pay this, you will really struggle. Don't forget that you will lose at least 20 percent of your salary on tax.
It is likely your kids would get subsidised education at the school if you decide to work there. If not, forget it. |

Wow, who rattled your cage? Sorry but, hmm, the first S in SAS stands for Shanghai and the last time I looked Shanghai is in China and so I thought I'd post my request for info and advice on an on-topic China forum. Silly me. Of course I was met at the gate by another of these (self-appointed) forum guard dogs, who's unhappy as he has some grotty little dead-end job.

Good for you! Well done for knowing such a bloke! Oh, BTW, if you had bothered to read what you quoted (!) and tried to rip into then you'd know I was talking about education fees. With your obvious problems in reading comprehension I do hope you're not trying to teach ESL for a living. |

funny, but someone else has coincidently suggested your devilish reading skills on some other flamish thread of yours too. wazup with ya, devil
on the topic, those students that've got their parents pay such amounts of money to schools must be just fantastic. i mean with their knowledge, skills or personalities they've got to rock the teachers' world. and, their way's paved completely to the western educational system
cheers and beers to all angles we look from, but let's have some fish with that omega three oil |

the ones I have known have either sent their kids to the international school they are working at...usually one cn get at least one child in for no cost...or as to FTs that are teaching at language schools and have small kids; sent to Chinese school..much of the time a spouse will teach (for extra scratch)as the SO is employed by a better paying employer. Ex-pat packages often incl. schools allowance. |
