What is a decent monthly salary (before taxes) to expect for a 25 hour/week teaching contract in Dalian?

Housing is provided, as is an end of term stipend.

Airfare is not provided.

Cheers,

teaching hours? or classroom minutes? Language schools love to cheat you on this one

Weekends nights? How many days a week? 5 evenings and two weekends?
No airfare, that's 1,500 a month loss, depending

Get what kind of housing in print.

People will tell all sorts of stuff. Take a look at a uni job offered in Dalian. Double the salary (because you are working more hours and losing more of your free time) add the 1,500 a month you are losing out on the airfare they are legally obligated to give you. Throw in an extra 500 yuan for all the hassles. This is the salary you should want.
Do they provide computer/internet. DVD microwave and other basics. if not, add to the pot.
Also, vacations?

What's the difference between teaching hours and classroom minutes?

5 days a week - Weekends + 3 weekdays.

Housing is shared - two bedroom apartment.

Airfare is not provided, but the end of contract bonus covers it (basically, I need to commit 1 year in order to receive it).

Internet is provided, and I just asked about whether the apartment is furnished.

I can't find information about a university position in Dalian, so I'm not sure what I should be aiming for....

If anybody knows, please don't hesitate to post.

Cheers,

Around 6000. This sounds like a private school contract. They are pretty standard.

If it were me, I'd pass on this. One rule: NO SHARED APARTMENTS. There have been too many horror stories about this arrangement.

Imagine this:

Your new roommate is a 200 kg. religious fanatic who reads from holy books..loudly. He eschews drink (You don't.) and gets on your case if you so much have a beer with dinner. He doesn't wash, believing baths are for the rich. He smells like some of the local rivers. He hates his Chinese students, constantly referring to them in racial slurs. The school keeps him on because they got him cheaply and he's got a white face - - under the slovenly beard that seems as if it has attracted a new species of small, nasty insectia. He eats your food in the frig when you're in class and then denies it. He burps. He f*rts...the "silent but deadly" variety.

He fails to flush the toilet. He plays Peking Opera solos at max volume on your CD player which he's now commandeered. Rats have infested the place finding many pizza shells and other goodies he left on the floor. Cockroaches have chewed much of the plastic insulation from the electrical wires and so turning on a light or an appliance presents you with the potential for a Near Death Experience.

Did I make my point?

teaching hour .. Internationally is a 45 or 50 minute teaching period with a 10 or 15 minute break (taught 40 minute classes once ..sweet, but not enought time.

Contract A
24 hours. School's teaching period is 45 minutes, but you are not teaching 24 "45 minute periods" because 24 times 45 = 1080 minutes

Contract A calls for 24 hours in the classroom; 24 times 60 =1440 minutes (Top of my head, trust my math at your own risk) leaving 360 minutes, or about 4 more 45 minute teaching periods.
Potential 28 teaching periods/different classes kiss any free time goodbye. Never let them get away with this

Contract B
24 teaching hours ... still way too many, teaching hour is 45 minutes plus 15 minute break ..24 classes and not 28 classes per week.

Shared apartment ... Wow, let me out of here. There are some crazies in China, let me tell u. (hey, I heard that!)
I'm a religous fanatic. I hate Beijing Opera, I like beer, and I flush the toilet, and I shaved my beard. Love farting thoug, great cheap relief. proof u r eating healthy. Broccoli last night cabbage today

6,000 RMB??? for 24 hours.??? Ridiculous! Hey, look at my other posts. I get on people for giving unreasonable high salary expectations. But i feel sorry for my future here if there are laowais actually accepting something like this. Do the math, what 10 RMB per hour? And no airfare? And shared flat? Check out what a uni gives. add 8 extra hours at at least 100 RMB/hour (minimum here in lowly Henan,) and you will see how badly hosed u ill be at 6,000 RMB

I made 6000 for 22 periods per week back in 2004. I learned that the average Chinese teacher only taught 15 periods.

The classes were 30 min long though....

6000 is a joke even though they try to con you with the "appreciating yuan" argument.

on the other hand, if you don't take it someone else will so it's best to be able to separate yourself from the pack (previous experience, already in the country, the body of a gymnast)
