Daydreaming a bit, but here goes.

Can I teach about 20 hours a week and live modestly in a nice town thats big enough to have a modern, dynamic feel to it.
How much would a modern 80m2 home (800ft) with a garden cost in a nice area of town? Possibly longer term plans.
Are all the nice towns overrun with American retirees or tourists? Sorry, I like Americans, it's just that the more white faces there in town the less the individual benefits from having a white face.
How are Mexican women? A crass question for sure, but in Asia I am getting a bit tired of women with nothing to say and no flesh on their bones. Boobs and brains; is it too much to ask for? Smile
How many 40+ year old teachers are there in Mexico? I ask because in places such as Chiangmai Thailand the problem is that all the gringos there seem to be either 25 or 65. Can a 42 year old find a social scene?
Degreed, CELTAd, likeable teacher with 10 years experience. I'm very popular with my students in Japan but of course don't know if that would transfer to Mexico. Where will I be in the food chain?

I know Mexico is a huge area and each city is different. Just trying to get a feel. Many thanks.

Oh and I'm British. Would that affect things?

What do you offer Mexico?

The real question is do you understand the cultural differences between teaching in Asia where students are respectful and subservient and Mexico where they are demanding, late and casual.

A Canadian came here from teaching in Japan where students brought him a gift if he was late and lasted about two weeks after locking late Mexican students out of his classroom and refusing to give them a scheduled exam.

My recommendation, based on your post, is that you look before you leap both for your benefits and for that of your potential future students.

You should be able to get a decent uni job or at the very least work in a language school. The chains don't tend to employ people over 35 these days and Mexico is full of this kind of discrimination anyway.

Not too many retirees here in SLP, but then there's not much to do. Not too many tourists here either so you do feel that you're in Mexico. Not sure about the retiree hotspots, I'd guess the beaches.

Mexican women have boobs, not sure on the brain front. They age pretty well though. British is a good nationality to be in Mexico. Students are convinced that we speak the purest form of English (such a pure language!) and think London is a country that would be a cool place to visit. Americans are well received (on the surface) and Canadians are often lumped in with them.

As El Gallo points out, Mexican students will annoy you, especially the punctuality thing, being British.
