Hey ppl,

I'm interested in teaching in Stockholm or Gotheburg, but don't know much about the job markets there. I will have an Australian and Bulgarian passport by the time I get there and start looking. Any feedback on the Swedish scene would be most welcome!

Epiphanie

For all of Scandinavia, you generally need serious qualifications, experience, and local connections. It's a very tight job market.

Well, I have a TEFL certificate, and I'm going to China to get a bit more experience first...
How much experience would you recommend? 1 year? 2? 5?

I appreciate your feedback,
E Smile

An introductory certification isn't going to help much in Scandinavia. I was thinking along the lines of an MA or DELTA, actually...

Also, experience earned in China may not be seen as particularly strong on a CV for European countries. The parallels between teaching Chinese students and teaching European ones are slight - learning styles and teaching/learning cultures are very different!

That said, perseverence, local contacts, and the willingness to work hard for what you want can still open doors, so long as you have the legal right to work in a country. I think with your Bulgarian passport, you have a chance to be legal - you could check this easily. But honestly, I think you will have to save up some good amount of money, go there, and try, if this is really what you think you want in your future.

Competition is tough up in the north, If you're a qualified teacher, try international schools, like ibo.org
