Any staffers at Hail teaching English in the 1st Semester of the 2008-2009 year like to mention the current accommodation and working conditions?
There are definitely some horror stories out there from 2007. Has it improved or should potential employees remain distant?

What are you doing? Don't you know that there are a half dozen posters on here who thrive on pummeling newbies for such a query?

The rationale behind (insert Newbie query on Hail here____) is that, as a new poster, you have few, if any, rights, and certainly any slip you make will be pounced on and publicly derided.

This is a Teachers' Community. It is not, however, a Community of Practice. So-called "newbies" join, and frequently become so discouraged by the hostility they find that they cease posting after a few days.

And what are you doing? It might be more constructive to simply answer the questions asked by the OP.

You mustn't be aware of some of UoH's previous threads.

The formula typically is :
Newbie+Hail question = Open Season for Hail slander + either locked thread/gross negativity.

Housing - Passable to very, very good. (Married housing is downright 2 thumbs up.) Quiet describes the environment.
School - fine. No micro mgmt or present issues. Former mgmt has been replaced by director who is well liked by all teachers. Work runs well. Students are respectful.

Some horror stories, were, well, ummm based in truth, as a movie is based on a real story. Pure truth does not make for a slanderous rant, does it. (But the housing could not have been bad as it is quite nice for those in the Mishar compounds.)

Yes, there are several of us who have seen, worked, and survived Hell U.

Mishar is great for a gulag installation, the rest is a stretch.

Remember, if you are a slave boss, naturally you live better than the help.

Family housing is interesting, especially if living out in the sticks is your bag. However, the wild dogs like to be active after sunset.

There are better places to earn the Riyals.

They had high turnover for a while. Monsieur Brasscat was one of those "turned over". Hail is not such a bad place. You need to be able to entertain yourself.

I hear the dry cracked swimming pool is a real screamer for midnight boredom.

Of course the feral dogs are great singers in the middle of the night.
Then you have your exciting once a week 2 hour shopping trip, wheee!
The adventuresome work on their hooch vats.

Ladies usually hold a contest to see who can go craziest first. About 6 weeks is the normal. Nothing like hanging out in the old apartment all day to toast the brains.

Yep'er, a real paradise for discovering the lint in your navel.

Hail is OK with a car and nice accommodation, especially if you're hired by the university ( direct hire ), you will get paid on time , get driving licence, if you like to rent accommodation outside the university's compound you will get housing allowance. The medical insurance for you and your family is secured by the university...
This is a good place in this time of the finanicial crisis !
Donot listen to the negative people, some Western teachers are arrogant and look down on the others !! despite the Western governments asking the Arab countries to save them by participating in the resecue's fund and bailout plans!!

Sure is pleasant to hear for fair minded unbaised people.

Of course the off topic remarks about how Arab Banks are saving the world are most fair(!!!).

Then of course, we really must totally believe such goodies as paid driver's licenses and off compound housing are part of the new benificent Junta.

Getting paid on time in KSA, now there is a dandy, not impossible, but like the rain, it comes and then.............

Yes, we experienced people are just a screaming drag on the whole fun Saudi Party.
