It is hard setting up a job in the States when you're abroad and can't attend interviews.

I'm considering coming back and substitute teaching until I find regular work.

If anyone knows what the regs and qualifications are for substitute teachers in the States of New Mexico, Georgia, Ohio, Alaska, please post a note or pm me.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if this will help, but you can find the certification requirements for all fifty states at the link below.

Each school district has their own requirements for substitute teachers that may or may not be the same a permanent teacher (meaning that a K-12 teaching certificate may not be required if all you are going to do is sub).

John, thanks. The link answers my questions.

The next big step is how to apply for jobs in the USA when you are abroad.

If anyone knows of any networking systems out there, please add them to this thread.

The primary purpose of "substitute teaching" is to justify the presence of students in either a compulsory or pay system.

flutterbayou: my husband has been substitute teaching mathematics in Arizona; there is plenty of work and it is casual enough to be able to get time off for trips to Central Asia where he continues consultancies in (edit) higher ed. The flexibility is fantastic. He set up his jobs a few months ago from Mexico by identifying leads and calling around with skype. I'll get him to send you a pm when he gets back later this month. good luck.

(edit Monday: flutterb: please check your pm. hope the info helps. best. DaD.)
