It is really nice here and I like my school. So what do I have to complain about. Well, nothing, except for the fact that there seems to be zero to do after work.
Has anyone overcome living in a small town with few expats, and a language barrier?
Tried picking up extra classes at a cram school and got nowhere, then thought I would take Chinese lessons at one of the two uni's we have and found out nothing is offered. They don't seem to know what a gym is either. Would kill to play badminton or tennis, but I get a blank stare when I ask about such things.
I like the culture here but how do you get involved and feel like you have a life.
PLEASE, if anyone has suggestions they are welcomed.
Thanks |

Learn the language. At least to play tennis! Then learn more from your tennis partner. Adapt.
There are probably a lot of tennis players and badminton players near where you live. Go past the blank stares. |

i think wood was being sincere. anyways, i overcame living in a small town by buying a scooter and getting out as much as possible. it became my favorite part of the week when i would explore the surrounding hills or go into the big city to buy exotic familiar foods. i even used it to get to the gym which was about 15 minutes away. also, check out tealit.com. maybe there is a chinese tutor in your area who could teach/befriend you for cheap. |
