I saw this survey in the October 2008 edition of The Word (page 16).
Cimigo interviewed 1,000 Vietnamese people aged 15-64 living in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

2/3 said it was okay for foreigners to marry Vietnamese.

36% said foreigners should be charged more for goods and services.

14% said they had a foreign friend.

86% said they thought foreigners adapt well to Vietnam.

52% said they thought foreigners had a positive impact on Vietnam's ecomony.

The UK & the US- the favorite foreign nationalities of the Vietnamese

3% said that foreigners had a negative impact on Vietnam's society.

I guess I'm not too surprised. I've encountered plenty of bigoted and dishonest people in Vietnam, but these people are outnumbered by the good people I've met.

I much prefer to be called an Australian than a foreigner.

But a foreigner is exactly what you are. I love the Vietnamese, but American is what I'll always be - no matter how long I'll live here or how well I speak Vietnamese. I'm a foreigner.

Guess it's sort of irked you that Australians weren't on the "preferred" list.

You are correct. I am a foreigner. I just hate the word because I know if I called someone a foreigner back home what would happen to me. I think now days it carries with it a negative connotation and not a message of acceptance.

Not to say that it isn't correct just that I don't like it.
