the 4400 is the title os a new x-files type series, or at least it was new last time i was home. spookily 90% of chinese employers seem to offer a 'travel allowance' of 2200RMB. which is like - - - - erm - - - half!!! coincidence? - i think not

But seriously - why 2200? why do all the universities offer the exact same travel alllowance, which is essentially, not worth a damn? i have 2 reasons for asking

1) boredom
2) heineken is on special in my local wal-mart
3) boredom
4) cos im bored

oh - wait...........

I was. I really was. have been in China for 2.5 years, just never amended my profile since I signed up. Oh - and I am pretty sure Heineken is Dutch...

I think it's a government thing. They stipulate what each school must do (at a minimum): housing and materials inside the housing, holidays, food, travel allowance amount, etc. If you're lucky, of course, that travel allowance is just a little extra money 2X a year just before your holiday times and you'll land a nice job where the salary is nice, bonuses are not rare, and there are extra perks where it wouldn't even matter if you DIDN'T see that allowance.

Not enough to support your 5 star tastes...?

300 rmb each way for an overnight train to somewhere scenic you haven't been before.
600rmb

5-10 nights in budget accommodation.
500rmb

Total
1100rmb

I'm sure you can pay for the rest (and your luxury excess expenses) yourself...

Dude - if your happy to stay in a fleapit at 50 rmb a night in one of Chinas 'scenic' spots then you win. let me know when you find decent accomodation at this price near say Nanjing road, or Wangfujing street. Plus I prefer to fly. somehow spending 24 hours on a train has lost its appeal recently. I know I know, decadent pampered bla bla bla.

I ain't 5 star. Maybe 3. Sorry if this offends your sensibilities. Might be an interesting poll question. hands up those of you who can manage a ten day trip on 1100RMB?

Hey dude,

I hear you. I'm often on 500-700rmb a day when I travel too. But, I don't expect the Chinese Government (via the Foreign teachers' supplement given to public schools and universities (15000rmb/month/teacher, if you believe the X-Files types...)) to pay for it.

That said, I will criticise these 10 year old SAFEA standard salary (3000-5500rmb/month) and travel allowance (1100/semester) figures as being very out of date, having not even moved in that time while China's economy and inflation have been expanding/rising at enormous rates.

10 years ago 1100 rmb probably could give you a pretty comfortable 5 day holiday. (???)

That said, 1100rmb can still get you somewhere decent (hostels, backpackers, farm houses), and there're plenty of places within a nice 9-10 hour sleeper train of anywhere in China... So, 24 hours is not necessary... you're just being argumentative by saying that!

China's a very big country with a big range of landscapes. Don't tell me you only go to Chinese "famous" places...?

true - not nessacary frequently. I am but 2 hours from Shanghai or Hangzhou, worthy places to visit. In the summer i Did a tour of some students home towns all 2-8 hours, I mostly took the bus. But other recent trips were to Xian and Shenzhen, 24 ish train hours. I went to SZ during national day - i had 7 free days. spent 4 hours on a plane rather than 48 on the train. but i bunked down in an ex students spare rooms. I don't throw money away, but when i gotta go the hotel route, ill spend 200-300 a night for relative comfort.

you can get an ok place for 50-65RMB a night... In Sanya i found a hotel 5 min walk to the beach witha beautiful view for 60RMB a night... it was during low season (mid August).. 2 nice beds, western toilet, clean sheets and towels, ac, tv, and nice little desk. I could even steal wireless internet from the hostel upstairs.
