About four weeks ago I started writing some news articles for my students. My school uses standard Jr High textbooks, and the content is pretty bland for the kids. So, I wanted to create something that would let them use their English ability in a real world situation.

So, I created Sunrise NEWS. The fourth issue was just released yesterday. The first few issues went over quite well, and you can even impress your JTEs and/or students with it. I am sure they would much rather talk about real life than about Yuki and Takashi.

If anyone wants to contribute, I could really use some more writers. You will, of course, be credited in the magazine itself. I am looking to expand the magazine over time.

Please have a look and let me know what you think! Very Happy

The post has been updated!

We now have a domain at SunriseNEWS.jp and a podcast listed on iTunes.

This magazine has really improved and is a great resource to use in class. I have been using it every week and both my JTEs and students love it. The articles are great for the studious students and the games are great for everyone.

That's a very nice newsletter there!

I have a question for you: Are the students able to understand the articles as they're written? Even with the vocab hints, I think this stuff would be too difficult for the JH kids that I teach.... Confused

Thanks. It really depends on the students. The top students can understand very well, while the other students may not. That is the reason I give all of the students the entire magazine. That way, if a 2nd or 3rd grade student can't understand the article from their own level - they can try reading the lower level news or the short news on the back.

All of the grammar is things they have covered, so only the vocabulary should be difficult for the students (hence the English Hints). The worse case scenario though, is that the students only learn the spelling of some new vocabulary words and get to enjoy some English games.

With many of my students, at this point, I consider that a success.
