My husband and I are teaching at NIT this year. Our contract was very detailed and everything has been honored - a super big two bedroom apartment with furniture, tv, computer/printer and internet, bathroom, kitchen, utensils, bedding, etc. It is on campus.

The Foreign Affairs dept. asks student interns to assist foreign teachers: They can translate for you at the bank, help you find grocery stores and necessities. It is really helpful during the first few weeks. Cool

We teach at the International Education College (Department). At the beginning we met with some teachers and students to review the syllabus, but intellectual autonomy is okay here. We covered the main points on the syllabus, but create our own plans for implementation.

Teachers at the English Department describe a similar administration technique. They treat teachers well here. They are also flexible with scheduling. Really, there should never be any complaints about the contract with this school!

You are welcome to orchestrate any English activities, such as films, advanced conversation, etc. It will keep you busy! There are several clubs who want English speakers as sponsors, but there aren't enough teachers to go around!

Yes, Nanyang city is very low educated, mostly agricultural. But this is a great place for a first-time Chinese ESL teaching experience. The campus is very clean with beautiful landscaping! But the city is a little dirty, street vendors, traffic, etc. But there is a parkway along both sides of the white river - runs for about 6 miles! Very close to the school.

Enjoy the photos!

I am sure one of our brethren will be here soon to dispute all of the above, as many others have done in the past.

Is this the person that contacted me?

The biggest problem I know of in Nanyang is the tendency to treat people from different countries differently, if you get my drift

This city and this Institute have been dealt with rather thorougly over the years here on Dave's. There are posts for and against and other vivid descriptions.

I would encourage anyone seeking a balanced point of view to type in "Nanyang" as a restricted search (the term only) and select China Forums only.

Read what is written. I was shocked by some of it -- not just the city but the quality or lack of quality of some of the foreign teachers.

This is why I decided to post this. Our experience here has been great. I can only speak for NIT and our position here. We have had good students, great support staff, and a wonderful time since we have been here. Yes, the city of Nanyang is a little rough around the edges, and yes, it seems the schools have a hard time getting quality teachers. I will be more than candid with anyone interested in working here. Very Happy

Well, I am waiting for other negative responses from recent teachers (last 2-3 years)....? Am I crazy? Perhpas couples are treated differently than singles? I don't think so.

i truly believe most colleges go through 3-4 year cycles. They have some really terrible teachers, students and admin complain. So then the FAO office cleans up their act, pays a little bit more money, hires better teachers and treats them bettter. This often also coincides with the 5 year inspection from Beijing. Then they get better teachers, all is well, and the Fao office starts slacking. Second year is good, but not as good. By the third year the FAO office is back to their old ways, and then the 4th year lousy tteartment, then lousy teachers.

I have known several teachers there, the ones who were white and from US/OZ/UK reported a different school then the ones from SOuth Africa, and some other countries. However this was 2-3 years ago.

So if things are good there, report on. We should "reward" schools for doing good.

PS, I have Chinese friends in a very small town who just started their own private school in a small town near Nanyang, Fenfgheng I believe. I went their once to help, seen publically with them, and teacha couple classes. They paid me wonderfully, and treated me well. But it is just to far away from Zhengzhou to make it worthwhile. if you have any interest seeing a truly small town (taxi is 3 kuai), it would be a great experoience, PM me

Good luck in Nanyang.
