What new job? My school has already offered me a long-term position should I decide to stay on. They've even agreed to a several month leave of absence should I want to go home for a while and then return. I'm no fan of China (duh, really?), but going home to the current sticky mess may not be in my best interests. As long as I do a good job at my school I need not worry about searching for a new one for a good long time and, although there are many things I don't like about China, this is one huge thing that I do!

But in response to your question, you probably can start around mid-spring. Say April to early May.

Kev's right. If my math is intact, your present contract expires in May. If you want a fall placement, April or even March would work. If you want to start as soon as your contract is over, assuming you don't wish to stay at your present job, then you might begin earlier.

they said i can work here "20 years" if i want, but the contract is one year in duration. unless something lengthier is put down in writing it behooves me to have a back-up plan or two.

if worse comes to worst, i'll have to go sit on some beach for a couple of months. the horror!

They are trying to sweet talk you with "you can stay for 20 years" As soon as you don't follow their rules, demand/request too many things or they find someone cheaper, you are gone. Like you said always have a backup plan.

For a fall start: May. Start looking then. For a Spring start: late November is a good time to start looking, and by late December something good should pop up for that time of year, but the better paying jobs and better quality job offers fall more into the start of the academic year. There are exceptions, but they are exceptions after all...

I usually start looking six months early just to get an idea of what I want and start my applications as early as possible....
