I'm currently taking a CELTA course in Prague, through an IH International school and will finish the course on Nov. 28. I'm Canadian and purposefully left my options open but am now thinking about where to go.
Vietnam has been high on my list and so I am considering traveling via Trans-Siberian and making my way there, arriving sometime in December. I understand that because of Tet it may not be the best time to apply for work. However, on the other hand it seems logical to be on the ground to able to check schools out. I've looked over the Vietnam forum and it appears that there are jobs available, so this approach may work? Given that I will be newly certified, I have a BFA, am +50 years old and that my wife will be joining me after xmas does this make sense? Or should I start sending out applications asap because schools will be closing over Tet?
I am also an experienced kayak guide and am wondering if it may be possible to find work as an English teacher near Halong?
Any info, feedback, suggestions are welcome and much appreciated!
Cheers,

Sending out applications can't hurt, but you will find that most schools only hire people who are already in the country. However, there are a few that will recruit from abroad including international schools.
No idea about schools in Ha Long, but I do know its an amazing place to paddle round. I also hear that you can even paddle in the streets of Ha noi now. |

| Some good info. Thanks! Looks like we're going to do the trans-siberian and arrive before Tet. I hear it can be difficult to find accommodations during Tet. So two ideas: try booking now? any recommendations? either north or south. I'm easy. Also thinking I'll get CV out asap to some language schools and maybe get some accommodation through them? I took my CELTA through IH and am thinking of starting there. I'll be prepared for hanging tough if no work right away. Good chance to check out the opportunities and maybe even get some paddling in! Sounds a bit wet there at the moment. Any tips very appreciated! |
