I'm wondering if anyone has done or heard of someone doing some sort of small business on the side (not teaching related). I'm sure there are visa, etc restrictions on this but there is often gray areas where you can find opportunities.

If you get caught you can be thrown out for violating your visa, but that really depends on what you are doing, and whether it violates.

Would you be a specialist in humanities?
